Planting a Garden of Hair

A typical adult has about 100,000 hairs on the head. It is normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs a day, although most of us are not willing to part with any one of those. Hair loss is very common treatable condition in general population.

Hair loss triggers several medical conditions such as the following:

Alopecia - Baldness or loss of hair.

Alopecia totalis - Loss of all the scalp hair.

Alopecia universalis - Loss of all body hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes.

Alopecia areata - Sudden loss of patches of hair.

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder resulting in the loss of hair in patches. The person's own immune system attacks the hair follicles, resulting in round, smooth bald patches on the scalp. This condition can progress to complete scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) and/or complete body hair loss (alopecia universalis).

Graying of hair - Hair is dead part of the body or without blood vessels. The bulb of hair beneath the skin is only living part. Hairs in the bulb absorb melanin, which is produced by pigment cells. If the pigment cells stop producing melanin the hair turns white. When one starts getting their hair grayed before the age of 35, this is called as Premature Graying of hairs. Causes of gray hair includes aging, excessive dieting, stress and irregular sleeping habits.

Common Causes of Hair Loss

  • Auto immune diseases - an immune reaction attacks the hair at the root (or follicle). Anti-bodies attack hair tissue as if they were foreign invaders.
  • Connective tissue disease - causes scarring of skin, loss of circulation to hair follicles and an autoimmune reaction leading to temporary or permanent loss of hair.
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals - Common toxic chemicals, such as tobacco smoke, contains hundreds of lethal and damaging chemicals which can accelerate normal hair loss. This can be caused directly from smoking or indirectly from second hand smoke.
  • Chemotherapy or Radiation exposure - Irradiation therapy or exposure to radiation from any source can cause localized or total hair loss, sometimes permanently.
  • Hormonal changes - due to pregnancy, birth control pills, menopause and/or illnesses
  • Thyroid disease - either hypothyroid or hyperthyroid disease causes hair to become brittle and break resulting in localized or generalized loss.
  • Medicines - some prescription and over the counter meds can foster side effects such as hair loss. Like blood thinners (anticoagulants), gout medicines, chemotherapy medicines to treat cancer, birth control pills and antidepressants can cause excessive hair loss.
  • Individual reaction to illness or a personal sensitivity to the environment - Alopecia can be a reaction to foreign elements in your environment, similar to an allergic reaction.
  • Fungal and Bacterial Infections - impetigo and tinea capitis.

Look over the precautions below and apply to your lifestyle:

1. Prevent Hair Loss By Choosing The Right Shampoo:

Take head bath regularly to get rid of scalp excretions and dust. Alkaline based hair shampoos can damage hair and even kill it. Check the information on the packaging and use only shampoos with a pH factor in the 4.5 to 7 range to be safe. Conditioners are great for hairs but frequent use causes hair shaft to swell and damage cuticle.

2 Prevent Hair Loss by Treating Your Hair with Respect

Hair is particularly fragile when wet. So do not use a brush which causes too much tension on the hair causing it to break. Never rub the hair vigorously with a towel after a bath or shower. Instead, dab and pat the hair to remove excess moisture. Do not use hair dryers on high heat settings to avoid heat damage.

3. Prevent Hair Loss by Not Smoking

Smoking has a major negative impact on the body's circulatory system. Hair follicles thrive on a constant supply of oxygenated blood. Smoking adversely affects the blood's ability to do its job. Additionally, the nicotine smoker's crave causes the body to produce more adrenalin, a stress hormone. Stress can be a major contributing factor in hair loss.

4. Prevent Hair Loss through Proper Diet and Exercise

A balanced diet with correct proportions of fruit, vegetables, cereals, dairy products and protein can have an amazing effect on the health of the scalp and hair production. Regular exercise, something as simple as a 30 minute brisk walk a few times a week, can do much to keep the circulatory system in good working order and deliver oxygenated blood to the scalp and hair follicles.

5. Prevent Hair Loss with the Daily Scalp Massage

The purpose of scalp massage is to increase blood circulation. Just use the balls of the fingers to apply light pressure to the scalp in a circular movement, one area at a time.

6. Stress.

Stress in any form, physical or mental can lead to increased hair fall. This is the commonest reason for hair fall and the more the person is worried about the hair loss, the worry itself acts as a stress factor, which in turn causes more hair fall - a vicious cycle.
